Dienoraštis mano vaikams

Having lost her father to Stalin’s purges of so-called ‘enemies of the people’, Juli returns to Hungary from the Soviet Union. There she moves in with Magda, a stern Communist Party member whose emotional coldness mirrors the repression taking hold across the country. In this new world, still scarred by the trauma of the Second World War, Juli witnesses the rising tide of Stalinism. Drawing on her own experiences, Mészáros revisits her country’s history with a critical, unsentimental eye. Like the filmmaker herself, Juli refuses easy answers as her political consciousness gradually takes shape. The first film in the Diary trilogy won the Special Jury Grand Prix at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival.
